Procolorist – Contour:

Procolorist – Contour is a proprietary colorist tool, a plugin for DaVinci, that offers unparalleled color grading aesthetic opportunities. It utilizes a proprietary color science that functions through intuitive reactions to creator goals, similar to having one’s own color science function on the fly. This is not only effective for visual appeal but also for rendering stabilization. If someone online can do it, chances are someone in Hollywood has done it, and now so can you.

Contour is a time-saver because it operates within modules designed to keep the creator on track, including Curve, Split-tone, Saturation, Density, and Hue. There’s no need to follow predetermined steps when using Contour. Instead, use whatever modules make sense; there is no degradation to the image that will endanger clients and their final projects during a grading session or on set.

While colorists may think differently about their craft based on experiences outside of the DaVinci world, this can be understood with Contour’s second-to-none toolkit. For example, any colorist can feel free to oversaturate, provided they are using saturation masks or forced sliders designed to create negative space and colors separate like The Wizard of Oz, without ever letting the viewer know that one corrected the image to that extent. Also, “profiles” exist to give an editable look where one can take bits and pieces from templates applied by others, and possibly learn from it while doing so, as colorists won’t give away all their secrets.

Contour also has an easy-to-use interface with useful tooltips and a manual at the ready for every easy construction of one’s design. Also, through an annual or perpetual license of purchase comes a two-day course on design learning, at no charge, ensuring that anyone who purchases Contour learns what the creators know about the types of looks someone may want to create.

Each module of Contour is designed with specific aims. Curve allows for independent comparison to contrast something without unintended consequences; Split-tone allows for true independent coloring; Saturation offers “Versus Sliders” so one can see what might happen if a color was untrained versus trained to get a better response; Density allows for realistic density adjustments of color from opacity to softness; Hue enables identification via colors that will be better transmitted down other pipelines.
